A new biography documenting the life, professional career and leadership journey of Nigerian consulting engineer, Engr. George C. Okoroma, FNSE, FAEng, JP, has been unveiled in Rivers State.

Titled Edged in Excellence: Becoming a Leading Professional, the approximately 400-page, 43-chapter book was written by Okoroma’s son, Chukwumela George Okoroma.

The book traces Okoroma’s journey from his early beginnings in Omoku, Rivers State, through his education and professional career to his emergence as a prominent figure in Nigeria’s consulting engineering profession and his elevation to the presidency of FIDIC Africa in 2026.

The publication was unveiled at a book launch attended by professionals, public officials, family members, friends, colleagues and members of the engineering and business communities.

Beyond documenting Okoroma’s professional accomplishments, the book examines the values, relationships and experiences that shaped his career and leadership philosophy.

The foreword to the book was written by the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Prof. (Mrs) Ngozi Nma Odu, who, according to the publication, captured its central message with the observation that true greatness is built on obedience, diligence, humility and consistency.

Four Dimensions of Okoroma’s Life

Reviewing the book at the launch, Dr Emmanuel David Dorgbaa, Founder and Executive Director of AIPSCE, described the publication as more than a conventional biography.

Dorgbaa said the book could be regarded as “four books bound as one”, given its combination of biography, personal testimonies, Christian reflections and professional materials.

He explained that the first section focuses on Okoroma’s biography, documenting his early life, education, professional journey and commitment to the Church of Christ.

The second section, titled Reflections from Family, Friends and Well-Wishers, contains testimonies from Okoroma’s children, lifelong friends, mentees and professional colleagues.

According to Dorgbaa, the accounts provide perspectives on Okoroma from people who encountered him at different stages of his life and career.

The third section focuses on faith and Christian living, presenting selected teachings and reflections on issues including faith, obedience, stewardship, authority and the responsible use of resources.

The fourth section contains Okoroma’s professional writings and speeches, including technical papers and keynote addresses dealing with infrastructure development, engineering ethics, risk management, entrepreneurship, professional development and infrastructure financing.

Character and Professional Excellence

A major theme highlighted during the review was the relationship between personal character and professional excellence.

Dorgbaa drew attention to a question posed by Okoroma in one of his writings on Christian ethics in business and leadership: whether professionals and business leaders were truly serving as examples through their businesses and leadership positions.

The question, he noted, reflects the broader message of the publication that professional achievement should be accompanied by integrity, competence, service and responsible leadership.

The book documents Okoroma’s efforts to apply his engineering expertise beyond conventional professional engagements.

It states that his engineering firm, Gapec Consultants, has provided engineering services free of charge for Church of Christ building projects in Nigeria and beyond.

The gesture, according to the publication, forms part of the broader account of Okoroma’s approach to professional service and his use of technical expertise to support projects within the church community.

Family, Mentors and Colleagues

The biography also explores the contribution of people around Okoroma to the development of his career and achievements.

Dorgbaa particularly noted the acknowledgement given by the author to his mother for her contributions and sacrifices behind the achievements documented in the book.

He used the acknowledgement to emphasise that the story of professional success is rarely that of one individual alone, as families, mentors, colleagues, friends and communities often contribute to the development and sustainability of an individual’s achievements.

The book therefore presents Okoroma’s career not only through his professional accomplishments but also through the relationships and support systems that accompanied his journey.

Lessons for Professionals

In his assessment of the publication, Dorgbaa said its different sections ultimately reinforce a common message: that character should form the foundation of competence and leadership.

He described the book as a resource that could be useful to professionals, business leaders, institutional leaders and families seeking lessons in personal development, professional conduct and responsible leadership.

He encouraged readers to engage with the lessons contained in the publication beyond a single reading, particularly its reflections on character, faith, professional development and service.

The biography’s publication also provides a record of Okoroma’s professional writings and speeches, preserving his perspectives on issues relevant to engineering and infrastructure development.

The launch therefore served both as the unveiling of a personal biography and the preservation of a collection of professional and leadership materials associated with Okoroma.

With the account spanning his childhood and education, professional career, family relationships, Christian faith, technical contributions and leadership responsibilities, Edged in Excellence: Becoming a Leading Professional presents a broad account of the experiences that have shaped Okoroma’s life and career.

The publication comes at a significant point in his professional journey, following his elevation to the presidency of FIDIC Africa in 2026, and provides a record of the journey that preceded the leadership position.

The book launch in Rivers State brought together members of the engineering and business communities as well as family, friends and other associates to mark the publication and reflect on Okoroma’s contributions to professional practice, leadership and service.
